Review
Another classic DS remake, and another phenomenal success. New Super Mario Bros.brings the classic game back with a new exciting flare to it. It brings a new multiplayer mode, with mingames for your entertainment. New music, and character voices have been added, directed by the original composer of Super Mario Bros.
Plot Bowser Jr. captures Princess Peach, and it will take Mario to save her! Mario must adventure through levels and castles of various elements to save her.
Gameplay
The simple controls of this game could be expected, because of the similarity between it and the other versions. During the levels, there are times when Mario powers up, and the multiplayer addition is just another positive thing about this game. The game has eight worlds, and a total of eighty combined levels.
In single player, Mario tries to complete through the stages in order to rescue Princess Peach, but each time she is dragged off by Bowser Jr. farther, until the game is beaten. Mario can stomp on certain enemies like goombas or koopa troopas and can also power-up for an easier defeat. If Mario gets a super mushroom, colored red, he will grow or power up to Super Mario. Super Mario needs to be hit two times to die, unlike normal Mario. Fire Mario can be attained if you get a fire flower. He can shoot fireballs, which can kill certain enemies. Here are the new powerups. Shell Mario can protect himself, or bash blocks if a blue shell is achieved. The Mega mushroom, which is my personal favorite, can be used to smash enemies, blocks, and basically everything in sight as Mario grows enormous. Extra lives are given depending on the amount of damage caused. The mini mushroom shrinks Mario, allowing him to fit in small pipes and walk on water. He also gains mad jumping skills. You try to collect coins for lives, gold stars, while completing levels to completely finish the game.
Multiplayer is just one of the many new features of the game. It is called "Mario vs Luigi", where you face off against your opponent in a race for big stars. You can steal stars from your opponent, and ground pound makes them lose three. Don't lose!
Minigames are something I'm not gonna go in-depth about, but the main thing to know is there are twenty-eight total, and are divided into categories of "Action", "Puzzle", "Table" and "Variety".
Finally, you can do a lot of cheating in this game. By that, I mean that you can skip whole worlds and still beat the game. Here's how: some worlds have warp cannons that when certain secret exits are found, you can warp to a different world.
There is a lot of variety in levels, which makes the game great. From underwater to desert, and back to dungeons. It's just awesome.
Graphics
3-D sprites, with 2-D platforming? It's just sick. The graphics in this game are amazing, making this remake one that will enhance the gameplay value. Not only can you replay all the levels from the original Super Mario Bros., but you can see them with awesome 3D sprites, and the levels just seem so much better.
Sound
Asuka Ohta and Hajime Wakai, and was directed by a familar person. Koji Kondo, the original composer of the Super Mario Bros. music, which some of his much has been rearranged in this game. This game brings the first voice acting for Mario and the gang in a 2-D game.
Worth
So, you have the original Super Mario Bros., and you're thinking: "no way the DS version can be even close to being as good as this one." But guess what! You're wrong! The overall great gameplay with great sounds, the lengthy game and the addition of multiplayer overcomes the faults of this game, which are the sometimes short levels and some lack creativity. All I have to say is this: for any of you sad saps that picked Mario vs Donkey Kong 2 over this game for Christmas, you just wasted $34.99. Don't make that mistake. Buy THIS game.
